The company was set up just outside the
village of Box, near Bath. The surrounding area has been renowned
for elegant stone architecture from the Roman Baths to the Georgian
Crescents. In Victorian times, railway architecture reached a pinnacle
of taste and achievement, with Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Box Tunnel providing a prime
example.
With the western portal of Brunel's stunning Box Tunnel in such
close proximity and frequent view, we couldn't resist the challenge
of reproducing it as a cast stone fireplace (below). |
|
We scaled down the tunnel using Brunel's
own drawings as a specification and then worked with Hooper's, long-established
pattern makers in Box, to produce the original and carry
on the tradition of first class local craftsmanship.
The Box Tunnel fireplace is a thoroughly functional surround suitable
for most types of fuel. It can be used with a wide variety of grates
and stoves, but we feel that it looks particularly splendid with the
appropriately-named 'Brunel' stove. |
